Obento June 16, 17, 2010

Hello there, what's up?  Though summer is just around corner, I've been kind of tired lately from family matters.  I only made 2 bentos this week.  Well, 1 day left until the weekend, but maybe I will be pretty busy again tomorrow.  I might take a break from posting for a while.

Obento June 10, 2010

Well, can you guess what today's bento is! This one is very simple yet filling. Since it's getting much warmer here these days, I decided to make hiyashi-chuka (one of the Japanese cold noodles), but ramen noodles will mostly get soggy and not tasty after awhile.  So I used some thin pasta instead. You could use fedelini as well. It's better to toss those noodles with a little sesame oil after boiling and washing. BTW I'm bad at making boiled eggs so it doesn't usually go as I thought. This one is too soft, yesterday's was a bit over-boiled...
Oh I should write about a hiyashi-chuka sauce also, huh!? This time, I used some mentsuyu for the sauce. Awhile back I mentioned about mentsuyu, you know, it's a handy basic sauce for Japanese noodles and dishes. You can make a hiyashi-chuka sauce quickly and easily with it and a couple of seasonings. This time, I mixed a little of vinegar and lemon juice into mentsuyu. In addition, you can add some sugar if you like yours sweeter. This sauce is available as a salad dressing too. ; )

This one is yesterday's bento. As I wrote a few days ago, I'm trying to feed my hubby a healthy meal at the moment. He's going to participate in a marathon next Sunday. For that reason, his recent bentos have been simple and healthy. However, I actually want to be lazy so I'm just making an excuse LOL!

Undokai Bento

As I mentioned yesterday, we had an undokai on Sunday.  For those of you not familiar with undokai, it is a sport festival of elementary school.  It's a kind of Track and Field Day, I suppose.  The students had a race, relay, tug of war, dance and so on.  Luckily, late-flowering sakura trees were still bursting there!  They were double-flowered sakura.  The petals blowing in the breeze were falling down on us having lunch.  This undokai lunch only included Yuppi's favorites.  She did her best.  In the sakura shower, we had a great time on the undokai and of course we were really full up!

Obento June 7, 8, 2010

Hi all!  What's up??  It's fine here today.  Sounds like the start of summer yay!  We had an Undokai of Yuppi's school last Sunday.  Undokai (sport festival) is a kind of Track and Field Day.  Of course I made an undokai bento lunch that day.  Hubby ate too much the lunch, and he needs to prepare for the upcoming Marathon next Sunday, so he has a low-cal bento for a while.  I will post the undokai bento later.  So stay tuned!

I know, all people who saw this bento are wondering what babykins meant to make today!?  Strange dice-salad!?  I don't know at all, either.  Haha, just joking!  This morning, I meant to make a *chirashi-zushi bento*.  Can you pronounce it correctly?  I can't do!  I almost bit my tongue LOL!  Sushi rice is underneath these little cubes.  Hubby will sprinkle lemon-mayo sauce on the chirashi, then enjoy tasting this strange chirashi bento.

Good morning!  Some of you may already be aware of today's weather here, it's cloudy morning... dull shot!
This morning, babykins made some shumai for bento.  Do I have to confess!?  That these shumai were made from the rest of yesterday's tofu/chicken burger mixture, hehe.  I wrapped the mixture in gyoza skins because the nearby store was out of a pack of shumai skins.  So I reluctantly used it but it unexpectedly turned into kinda flowery things so I liked *gyoza-skin-shumai*!  Give it a try!!  It feels like a gyoza skin is too thick for shumai, though!?  I don't mind it, hehe.

Tofu/chicken shumai
Stir fried pieces of ika-squid (green onion, sesame oil, salt and black pepper)
Braised chicken tender and cucumber slices ume-salad
Atsuage steak (shoyu and oyster sauce)

Atsuage is a fried firm tofu, not watery so you don't need to drain.  Ume-salad is refreshing and good for the summertime bento.  Do you have any *ume-boshi* on hand?  I'm going to post the recipe when I can get around to writing it!

Obento June 2, 2010

Hi guys!!  Nice sunny morning, I feel so good! ^^  I was goofing around with bentomaking yesterday, oops.  But today, I did, yes!  So this one is the first bento in June.  I wonder how many bentos I can make during the month of June!?
Well this morning, babykins made tofu/chicken burgers.  I made the patty mixture in advance last night.

Obento June 2, 2010

Tofu/chicken burger skewers (chicken breast, tofu-atsuage, starch, salt, black pepper)
Omelet (crab kamaboko, green onion, salt)
Boiled carrot hearts (mentsuyu, salt)
Butter braised pumpkin (sesame seeds)
Four brown rice omusubi (siokombu, aonori-salt)
